Poles Apart

This half term our topic is ‘Poles Apart’ based on the book by Jeanne Willis.

We will think about different environments and countries and where different animals live. Within this we will look at similarities and differences between our country and others and different ways of life.

We will become familiar with globes and maps, and get the holiday bug in our travel agents based on where we learn about and have already experienced with our families!

Our learning journey starts with the North and South Poles, and lots of learning around penguins and polar bears, as these are the main characters in our story too.

Our provision for the first week has been based on the arctic circle, as we look at the North and South Poles and what lives there.
We have made boats in construction, wrote about polar bears and penguins, explored our arctic small world tray, booked holidays in the travel agents and got crafty in the creative area!

In our second week we are thinking about India. We have been looking at culture, animals, climate and food.
we found out that India is a hot country but has monsoon season which has lots of rain! India is so big it has billions of people living there, and there are lots of different places from snowy mountains, to jungles, to deserts!
We made some of the monuments we looked at such as the Taj Mahal.
We also really enjoyed making play dough animals as week as tiger masks!

Today we tasted some food from India.
We looked at the different foods you might see, and found out if any of us have experienced them before. We looked at the food we had today - Popadoms, Onion Bahji’s, Pilau Rice and Mango Chutney.
Before we started, we remembered when we tried foods from China and what we did to fully explore them with our 5 senses.
we were really good at remembering our senses of look, feel, hear, smell and then taste. When we got our foods we used all our other senses before tasting and it helped us to appreciate the food!
Popadoms were the firm favourite, and we all thought the Onion Bhaji’s were a bit spicy!!

After we tasted the foods, we all chose our favourites and wrote what we noticed.

Week 3 sees us move on to learning about the continent of Africa!
we are focusing on the country of Kenya whilst also considering the whole continent of Africa and the difference between a country and a continent.
We looked at different environments across Africa and wrote about these.
We also have some new artefacts from the museum to explore from different parts of Africa and these have provoked some really great conversations!
