Summer term

Welcome back everyone!  What a start we have had to this half term!

This morning was our great feast for Harry Potter.  It was lovely to see everyone in costume with their potions.   We spent time being sorted into our houses using the sorting hat before tucking in to our feast.  We then designed an advert to go alongside our potion explaining what the potion does - some of them are very scary! (See photos on the link at the bottom of this page)

This half term is our trip to Harry Potter studio tours in London on the 4th May.  Please make sure that all consent forms and money is paid by Friday 28th April.  Keep an eye out for letters over the next week in regards to further arrangements and details of the trip.

Please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school on a Monday and that it is left in school until Friday.  It should include outdoor kit as well as indoor kit.

The curriculum leaflet has been sent out for the term and is also on the class page (see below).

Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support.

Spring 2

Welcome back.  We hope you have had a lovely break and are raring to go.

This half term we will be continuing our text the Street Child.  The children are really getting into it and have made some excellent predictions about Jim's escape from the workhouse.  I can't wait to see the newspaper articles that the children are going to be writing.

In maths, we are going to be continuing our work on fractions and decimals, with a particular focus on decimals, using our mastery techniques.

On Friday the 10th March, we have the Sound Around Concert to look forward to.  We are very fortunate to have been invited to listen to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra play.  We will be  serenaded with music from well known theme tunes from children's TV shows.

Our PE day will continue to be on a Wednesday so please ensure that indoor PE kits are in school.  This should consist of black/navy shorts and a white T-shirt.  Tracksuits are not needed for indoor PE sessions.

Congratulations to the children who passed their National Curriculum in swimming.  We are so proud of you and a big well done to the children for their excellent participation and resilience in all the swimming sessions.

Please don't forget that the letter for our trip to Harry Potter has now gone out.  It will be a fantastic day and a wonderful experience for all the children.  Please ensure that the full payment of £25 is made by Friday 28th April.

Once again, we would like to thank you for all your support.

Spring 1

Happy New Year and welcome back.  We hope you have all had a lovely holiday and enjoyed spending lots of quality time together.

This half term we will be starting our new novel 'Street Child' by Berlie Doherty.  Our novel study area has now been transformed and is based on a Victorian workhouse.

Please see the curriculum overview to find out what we will be learning about in each subject over the next 7 weeks.

One of the roles that Year 5 children have in school is being a Playground Leader.  At the start of this half term, some of the children will undertake training in order to become Playground Leaders.  Their role will then be to initiate games at break times with children from different year groups.   We look forward to seeing the children take on this role.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to come and speak to us.

Autumn 2

Welcome back to the 2nd part of the Autumn term.  We hope you have had a lovely holiday and have enjoyed lots of family time.

Please see the curriculum overview leaflet with details of what we are covering this half term which can be found at the bottom of this page.

As always this half term will be incredibly busy with Christmas looming and lots of exciting Christmas activities to participate in.  Please keep an eye out for letters with details of events.

During Anti-bullying week, we will be visiting the Dome to watch 'The Good dinosaur' on the 16th November.  A letter will be sent out in the next few weeks.

The children have made a fantastic start to their swimming lessons with a huge proportion of the class passing their National Curriculum already!  Well done, we are so proud of you.

Please continue to listen to your child read as often as possible and please make sure that you sign their planners each time.  Children can also use bug club to read their book and answer the questions on the computer.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and if you have any queries please do not hesitate to pop and see us.

Kind regards

Miss Garrity and Mrs Meadows

Autumn Term 2016

Welcome back to a new academic year.  I hope you have all had a lovely summer and are raring to go!

This term, our novel study area is set up to look like outer space.  This links to our text George's Secret Key to the Universe.  Take a look at the pictures of our novel study area.

Our topic this half term is the Ancient Greeks and we will be learning about the battle of Marathon, Alexander the Great and holding a debate about the Parthenon.  We will also be sketching the 3 columns that were used in Ancient Greek architecture and also designing a Greek vase to represent some of Alexander the Greats achievements.

In science we will be learning about the earth, sun and moon which links nicely in with our novel study and as part of our Design and Technology, we will be designing and making a space buggy that can travel across the surface of the moon!

Our PE session will be on a Wednesday afternoon so please make sure that you have your indoor PE kits which should consist of black or navy shorts and a plain white t-shirt.

Swimming will take place on a Friday afternoon, starting on the 16th September (please see the additional letter that was sent out).  This will be a double session and we will arrive back in school at approximately 3:15pm.  Please make sure that all nail varnish from finger nails and toe nails is removed and any tattoo transfers as well.  All jewellery must also be removed.

I would also like to welcome Mrs Meadows, who is our teaching assistant, to the Year 5 team.  She will be working alongside us every morning.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to pop and see me.
