We are so excited to start our school journey and get to know the children!
To do this, we are starting the year with our "Marvellous Me" topic.
Our first text is "The colour Monster Goes to School" and we have been really engaged with the story, matching it to our feelings and emotions around starting school.

We then looked at 'The Day the Crayons Quit, continuing to think about our emotions, as well as our community!
Each day we received letters from different coloured crayons, and we loved trying to work out which crayon might write to us next and why! We talked through how each crayon felt and tried to understand why they felt that way, by seeing how much effort it took to do the things they told us! We also painted some black things to make black feel better as well as coloured some pink dinosaurs for pink!
We had lots of really great ideas how to settle the argument between orange and yellow, and discussed how to be a good friend.
We took this into exploring time and saw some fabulous friends and teamwork being made!

We then continued thinking about school and those in it, but started reflecting more inwardly, thinking about ourselves and our families!
To do this we have read 'Who's in My Family' by Robie Harris. We have shared our family pictures with each other, talking about the similarities and differences between our families, compared different types of houses, and also if we had pets and what they were!
Within this we have talked lots about people who are special to us and why, including what the word special means.

After looking at farmers and Harvest in our Explorer week (see explorer week pages) we thought a little bit more about people who help us. This then fed into our first Drawing Club week, and we looked at the text "Superworm".

Our wow words for the week are:

All children have really felt the joy of drawing club and mark making this week, and we are already starting to put our new phonic knowledge into practice whilst showing our fabulous imaginations!
Then we continued our learning around people who help us, focusing on the NHS!
We are very excited to have a mini hospital, and children have been very involved in healing each other, and role playing in the small world health centre!
Whilst thinking about the NHS we are not just thinking about doctors and nurses, but the many other jobs that people who work in care have! We especially like "phlebotomists" as we think their job has a funny name!
We had a special visit from one of our parents who works for the NHS as a midwife!
She talked to us about what she does, and we asked questions to find out more! We got to see scan pictures and real life blood pressure machines and stethoscopes!
Some of the questions we asked were:
Where do you work? Where do you eat lunch? What is your job? How did you get your job? Whi do you look after?
We also had a visit from another parent who is a paramedic! He talked about his job, and children again asked lots of questions to find out what they wanted to know.
We really enjoyed exploring the things he brought to show us. The helmet was heavier than we thought it would be! And we tried hard to make the bandages stay on the props and ourselves!
For our final week of this half term, we are reembarking on a drawing club adventure! we will be having lots of halloween themes running through the week, and in line with this, our text this drawing club is The Hairy Toe!

The first time we read the story, it made us jump! And we absolutely LOVED it!
All of us wanted to create our own monsters, and we had great fun doing so in lots of different ways!
