We kicked off our 'Celebrations' topic with Bonfire Night. We have been learning all about Guy Fawkes and how he tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. We looked at how we celebrate by lighting fires and watching fireworks. We made our own edible sparklers using breadsticks, icing and sprinkles and went into the hall to gather round our bonfire.
It was then time for drawing club! This week we read the book 'A Dark Dark Tale.'

We love a spooky story in Wren class so we got really excited to get stuck into our learning. We had wind up mice that whizzed around and landed on a CVC word which we had to read, We made playdough mice, we made mice in maths using circles and triangles and talked about the properties of the shapes as we worked and in construction we made dark houses and staircases.
We then learnt about Remembrance Day, which is always a firm favourite with the children. The children were so interested to find out what the poppy symbolises and were excited to share that they had spotted lots of poppies around the local area. We were so lucky that Elodie brought her dads medals into school to show us and we talked about how brave the soldiers were. We learnt lots of new vocabulary, including brave, parade, remember and war and wreath.
Our learning then moved on to Christmas and the nativity story, in preparation for our school nativity play. We also looked at how Hanukkah was celebrated and compared this Jewish celebration to the Christian celebration of Christmas. We leant about the Maccabees, the menorah candles and the dreidel. We were lucky enough to try some gelt (chocolate coins) and some doughnuts which are eaten as part of the Hanukkah celebration. We all agreed they were yummy.
