Summer

This term we started our new topic which is 'Roman invasion'. We started the unit by recapping the word 'chronological' and the children used their historical skills to plot the Romans on a historical timeline.

The children then used atlases to find out where the Romans came from. As geographers, we looked at why Italy was a good location for the Romans.

The children then explored what Ancient Rome was like. They carried out their own research before feeding back to the rest of the class what they found out.

In our literacy, the children have been working towards writing a balanced argument about 'Who gained the most when the Romans invaded Britain?' The children gathered lots of evidence to support both sides of the argument and they used a drama technique called 'conscience alley' to verbalise their arguments before starting to write.

In History, the children have continued learning about the Roman army and they have been comparing two important Roman soldiers – the Legionaries and the Auxiliaries. They used a Venn diagram to compare the two and then they discussed which soldier they thought were the most important within the Roman army.

To enhance our learning further, we went on a trip to Murton Park where the children learnt how to be Roman soldiers for the day.
