We have had a fantastic first full week at school. The children are settling beautifully and learning new routines. The first few weeks can be very tiring for the children but they have coped extremely well.
Our first book of the new school year is 'The Colour Monster Goes to School.' This book follows the day of the Colour Monster as he goes to school for the first time. The book explores the emotions that you might go through when starting school which are relatable to the children. The colour Monster turns different colours when he is feeling different feelings and that has helped us to understand our own feelings.
The colour monster was happy when he was playing musical instruments, so we had a go at exploring the musical instruments to see how it made us feel.
As well as this, we have been learning to do the 'Crocodile Snap.' This is a song that helps us develop our fine motor skills in preparation for holding a pencil correctly. The song is available on You Tube if you want to give it a go at home. We then had a go at using our crocodile snap to hold our pencil and trace lines from top to bottom. We took care and didn't rush and our teachers were so impressed with our effort!
Alongside learning about our emotions, we have been learning about our school and the wider community. We looked at maps of different places and then went on a tour around the whole school. When we came back to class, we had a go at drawing our own maps. We have done a survey to see how we all travel to school in the mornings and discovered that most people come by car. We have been practising our cutting skills, modelled with play dough, playing shops, reading books, building ramps for our cars to go down and, most of all, we've had fun. Phew... what a first week. The children have been wonderful.
We have had another exciting week in Wren class, this time looking at the book 'The Day the Crayons Quit.'
We arrived in the classroom on Monday, and we could hear a tiny little voice. We didn't know where it was coming from, but Mrs Nottage followed the sound, and we discovered it was coming from the crayon pot!! The crayons were talking to us... and not only that, they had hidden letters around the classroom for us to find. The crayons seemed very cross so we talked about how we could help them to feel better.
We have been creating with different colours this week which are linked to our topic.
We have started phonics this week and, as part of our phonics session, we begin with 'squiggle while you wiggle' to get those arms coordinated and strong ready for letter writing. All the children really enjoy the sessions.
We were also lucky enough to have a sports coach come in from 'Mini Athletics' to do a session with us. We didn't manage to get many photos because Mrs Nottage and Mrs Longley got involved and ended up being eaten by the shark!!
As well as all this, we've been reading books, exploring Numicon in our maths sessions, doing some mindful rainbow breathing after lunch to prepare us for the afternoon, lots of dancing and, most of all, we have been leaning through play.
Week 4 and we've been learning all about families. We have talked about how different families can be and how families may celebrate different things and eat different foods. We have looked at the difference between the city and the countryside and compared lots of different types of houses. We have also talked about pets and how they can be part of a family. We then painted one of our pets (or if the children didn't have a pet, they painted a pet they would like.) We have been copying patterns to make lollipop stick houses, making people and pets from shapes, drawing our family and writing the initial letter of their names and cutting and sticking houses.
In maths this week, we started learning about numbers, and we had a walk around school to find numbers in our environment. The children were great at spotting them 😊
We have put together an 'Autumn' tray to investigate signs of Autumn. We have been adding to this throughout the week and the children have enjoyed exploring it.
We have now learnt 8 sounds in phonics, m a s d t i n p. The children have a go at writing a letter each day with correct letter formation, and we are so proud of their effort.
Another busy and successful week 😀
Week 5 -
We have loved our learning this week. We have been reading the book 'The Little Red Hen' and linking it to Harvest and Harvest Festival.
We have learnt about planting wheat grains, which grow into wheat, then are harvested to be ground into flour at the mill. We had a close look at flour and then looked at a recipe to make bread. The recipe told us what ingredients we needed and what to do with it, and we followed each step carefully to make bread, just like the Little Red Hen. We even tasted our bread and it was delicious.
We have now got our 'pets' display finished and we're very proud of our paintings.
Week 6: This week we were very excited to start Drawing Club. We love Drawing Club in Wren class and our first book was Superworm.
At Drawing Club, we draw our picture and give it a special code (a word or sound) to make something crazy happen to it. We let our imaginations go wild and come up with some fantastic ideas, all while practising writing sounds or words without even realising it because it's so much fun.
As well as Drawing Club, we have been learning about 'people who help us.' Lots of our provision this week has centred around role play, and we have been police officers, firefighters, dentists and doctor to name just a few.
