Spellings are an important part of the Year 2 curriculum. In Year 2, we are continuing to develop our spelling skills and build confidence with common spelling patterns and tricky words. Regular practise at home makes a big difference and helps children to remember new spellings and use them confidently in writing.
Regular phonics practise will also help your child with spelling, reading and writing.
In year 2 spellings are given each week, generally on a Friday. Please encourage your child to practise these spellings using a range of activities such as using the sheets provided by school, using bath crayons, putting some sugar on a plate and letting them write the word in the sugar. We will test spellings by selection a few each week and asking children to write them within a sentence.

Each year there are specific words that are difficult for children to 'sound out' using phonics such as 'because' and we call these words common exception words. It is expected that children can read and write these common exception words by the end of
Year 2
