Reading in Year 2

Reading regularly is one of the most important things you can do to support their learning. We encourage all children to read at home every day, even if it is just for 5 minutes.

Reading little and often helps children to build fluency, develop their vocabulary, improve their comprehension and, most importantly, grow a love of reading.

Please take some time to listen to your child read every day, whether that's their school reading book (Bug Club book) RWI text or a book from home. As well as reading the words please try and ask your child questions about what they have read. Asking questions about the characters, events and even new vocabulary can make reading more enjoyable.

Phonics really plays an important role in helping children become confident, independent readers. In Year 2 we continue to practise the sounds and spelling patterns they learnt in Reception and Year 2, helping children sound out, blend and read unfamiliar words.
