At Hayfield Lane, we want our children to be inspired by their learning and to develop a love for reading and writing and so, in English, we use a novel study approach. High quality novels are carefully selected each half-term or term; these vary from texts such as Trash by Andy Mulligan, which covers many serious issues surrounding human rights, to picture books such as Into the Forest by Anthony Browne. Children study these books as a class, exploring the themes and motifs in each text. Each week, they are immersed in the text through drama and discussion activities, leading to high-quality written outcomes. Children also become part of each novel, as classrooms are transformed into scenes from the novel.
